Sugar Free Products
A lot of experts on diabetes type 2 say that sugar is your worst enemy: that it’s largely responsible for type 2 diabetes, and that it should be removed as much as possible from your diet, so that you can beat diabetes.
From the moment you got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance, you get pounded with messages about how dangerous sugar is for your health.
However, this is only half the story. You'll see why.
What most people do do is avoid sugar and turn to diet, "sugar free" products.
That’s logical, granted, but unfortunately it’s also very dangerous in the long run.
The artificial sweeteners used in the majority of "diet" products like soda and sugar free yogurts are even more harmful than regular sugar itself.
Chemical sweeteners are actually worse for weight gain and diabetes all by themselves.
Aspartame makes you fat.
You get what I'm saying here? Imagine you're eating NO sugar but your blood sugar is all over the dial.
Here's the deal...
A study on mice showed that aspartame inhibits an enzyme in your intestine which usually warns you of any risk of obesity.
So your body's inbuilt alarm system to prevent weight gain and toxic fat formation is switched off.
Dangerous isn't it? In fact...
It's catastrophic for anyone who follows a ketogenic diet, for example (a diet with no sugar, but a lot of fat).
Sucralose causes diabetes
This is the other leading sweetener used in the food and drink industry.
Sucralose could in fact be directly responsible for causing type 2 diabetes in non-diabetics who overindulge in it.
According to a study which appeared in the journal Diabetes Care, sucralose increases your insulin production and blood sugar levels when combined with the glucose in your diet.
When consumed over long periods of time, diet soda is linked with insulin resistance.
Sweeteners increase your appetite
What’s more, your brain can distinguish between artificial sweeteners and real sugar, so this disrupts appetite regulation and the reward system in your brain.
The result is that you want to eat more, and you end up eating more when you consume drinks with sweeteners in them than when you drink water.
Sweeteners attack your gut bacteria
What’s more, it’s been proven that artificial sweeteners have a harmful effect on your intestinal flora, or microbiota; your "second brain".
This intestinal flora is essential for controlling your weight, as well as for preventing depression.
So what are the healthy alternatives?
Thankfully, you can get some natural sweeteners which will make the transition to a healthy diet which doesn’t contain any kind of candy a bit easier.
They aren’t calorie free, which is better for you because they don’t start sending mixed messages to your brain, but their glycemic index (GI) is a lot lower than white sugar’s GI (60) and their sweetening capacity is generally far superior.
This means that they don’t raise your blood sugar levels too fast; instead, they release their energy slowly into the body.
Recommended natural sweeteners:
1. Lucuma powder
This fruit powder which comes from the Andes has a low GI, a delicious caramel flavor, and is full of great nutrients. Lucuma powder is the star of the show when it comes to sweetening your Diabetes Freedom Super Drinks.
2. Xylitol: GI 7
This sweeter, which comes from birch bark, is 30% sweeter than sugar, and has a GI of just 7.
It also has properties which help to fight Candida albicans and dental cavities. As with polyols, it’s best not to have too much if you have irritable bowels.
To be eaten on special occasions only:
Agave syrup: this cactus syrup has a neutral taste, and a reasonably low GI of 19, even if it is a little high in fructose, which tends to reduce your sensitivity to insulin.
Coconut sugar: this palm sugar comes from nectar from the flowers of the coconut tree, and has a GI of 25. It’s rich in potassium, but contains 90% fructose, so you shouldn’t have it every day.
Last step before coming off it completely
To finish off, I’d like to remind you of a common sense rule.
Yes, you can improve blood sugar by replacing sugar and high glycemic index ingredients with healthy, low GI substitutes.
However, any sweetener, whether it’s natural or artificial, will lead to cravings for that sweet taste.
Over time, even after you’re free of type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, you won’t want to be craving sugar.
And that means you won't be ingesting the nasty, toxic additives that are making diabetes a living hell.
To your health.
